Become a Mentor

Contributing your expertise, knowledge and experience can help a youth be successful in academic and social interactions, and beyond that, there is something in it for you:
  • You will develop a close relationship with your mentee
  • You will be re-energized personally
  • You will increase your commitment to your own career, and positively impact your organization
  • You will learn more by talking about and teaching others
  • You will increase your empathy, listening, caring and building trust skills; these attributes will spill over to other parts of your life
  • You will grow more confident
  • You will play an important part in the achievement of your mentee's goals, and
  • You will enhance your own self-esteem because it just feels good to help others, and it feels good to give.

Anyone Can Contribute

If you would like to volunteer specific services or items you feel would be useful to our program, feel free to contact us. We welcome your suggestions because we sincerely believe that it really does take a village to raise up a youth.

A Safe Environment

Our plan highlights a commitment to creating a safe environment for our youth and mentors to interact in a non-threatening atmosphere. Our mentoring takes place in the schools or school-related activities, or in activities directly supervised by The Mentoring Group.

You Can Become A Mentor

The Mentoring Group has simple requirements: You must be 21 years of age and live or work in Greenville County to apply. After completing your application, a police background check will be performed. You will then attend a two hour training session and you will be matched with a student who has interests that complement yours.

Mentors are asked to make a one-year commitment to the program and you are required to spend a minimum of three hours per month at school or in school related activities with your student.

You and your student are encouraged to participate in group activities sponsored by The Mentoring Group. Your commitment to this program and to your student is very important.
